RED LIGHT NEW MUSIC and guest artist, guitarist DANIEL LIPPEL present: DISCRETIONARY MUSIC 8:30 pm, Saturday, April 20th at Shapeshifter Lab 18 Whitewell Pl. Brooklyn, NY 8pm Saturday, April 20, the “sure handed” ensemble, RED LIGHT NEW MUSIC and guitarist DANIEL LIPPEL present DISCRETIONARY MUSIC at the Shapeshifter Lab in Gowanus, Brooklyn. A collaboration between Red Light New Music and guest artist Daniel Lippel, DISCRETIONARY MUSIC explores works that leave significant musical components to the interpreters' artistic and sometimes spontaneous discretion. Radically diverse in their compositional styles, each work maintains clear and unique artistic intention while experimenting with the performer's interpretive license and involvement in the compositional process. DISCRETIONARY MUSIC will feature world premieres by Liam Robinson and Daniel Lippel, and chamber works by Doug Boyce, Scott Wollschleger, and Peter Gilbert. Red Light New Music's captivating violist, Erin Wight, will present Bruno Maderna's Viola in a unique interpretation using audience participation to determine the piece's sequence and form. The Red Light Ensemble will perform earlier examples of discretionary music including John Adams' American Standard and Christian Wolff's Exercise 14. 7:30pm Opening Act: BENJAMIN LANZ, trombonist/sousaphonist/arranger/composer has enlisted the help of musicians from opposite ends of the “genre spectrum” to realize an aleatoric mashup of songs and chamber music. A chicken and the egg of small ensemble performance, the band will utilize acoustic instruments and circuit based electronics to explore the spaciality of the performance. |
