RED LIGHT NEW MUSIC

charlie wilmoth
Charlie Wilmoth's music combines unusual sounds with jagged, uneven repetitions and jarring juxtapositions that are often inspired by the way humans deal with technology, information, and religion. He graduated from the College of William and Mary, where he studied philosophy and music, then received a Master's Degree in composition from Wesleyan University, where he studied with Anthony Braxton, Neely Bruce and Alvin Lucier. Some of the musicians who have played his pieces include the Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Surplus, the Wet Ink Ensemble, Steven Schick, and the Flux Quartet. Wilmoth has also improvised with Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Christian Wolff, Wadada Leo Smith and Mark Dresser, and he has played notated music on the viola with the new music groups SONOR and Wavelink. He has participated in festivals such as Akademie Schloss Solitude (Germany), Darmstadt (Germany) and Ostrava New Music Days (Czech Republic), and he has been an artist in residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (Florida). Wilmoth tours regularly with his rock group, FOX Japan, and plays with the GO Duo, a country cover band. He is also a freelance writer and is a contributing editor for Dusted Magazine. Wilmoth is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at University of California, San Diego, where he studies with Roger Reynolds.
