Annesley Black was born 1979 in Ottawa, Canada. After studying jazz and electronic music at Concordia University she began her composition studies with Prof. Brian Cherney (BMUS- Mcgill University, 2004), followed by studies with York Höller and Hans-Ulrich Humpert (2004-6, Hochschule für Musik Köln) . She completed her composition studies with mathias spahlinger, electronic music with Orm Finnendahl and film music with Cornelius Schwehr (Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, Diplom December 2008). She has worked as a composer and performer with dance and theater projects and with performance art and rock bands. Since 2008 she has been performing as a sound engineer assistant for recordings and concerts with the Experimental Studio SWR. She was awarded a scholarship prize from Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (2006), the composition scholarship from the Mozart-Stiftung, Frankfurt (2007- 8), the Busoni-Förder prize from the Akademie der Künste in Berlin (2008), the Stuttgarter Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart (2009) and is currently a stipendiary at the Berlin Akademie der Künste (Junge Akademie). Her pieces have been performed in Germany and Canada by Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), ensemble ascolta (Stuttgart), Ensemble Surplus (Freiburg), Ensemble Mosaik (Berlin), and Le Nouvel Ensemble Modern de Montréal among others.
